Wade's Causeway

Across the open moor south-west of Goathland runs a mile-long stretch of stone-laid track known as Wade's Causeway. Legend says it was built by the giant Wade for his wife Bell to reach her cow; antiquarians called it a Roman road; modern archaeologists suspect it may be even older, perhaps a Neolithic or Bronze Age boundary. Nobody is sure.

Whatever it is, it is a strange and beautiful thing to walk along, with nothing but moor, sky and grouse for company. Reach it on foot from Goathland or by the minor road towards Egton Bridge.
