Saltwick Bay

Follow the Cleveland Way south from the abbey for about a mile and a path drops steeply to Saltwick Bay, a rocky cove enclosed by two headlands, Saltwick Nab and Black Nab. At low tide the shale ledges are one of the best places on the coast to hunt for ammonites and other Jurassic fossils, and the ribs of the trawler Admiral von Tromp, wrecked in 1976, lie in the sand.

The bay is only accessible at low water and the tide comes in fast across the flat rocks, cutting off the beach; check tide times before you go and leave well before high water. It is a favourite of photographers at sunrise.
