Sleights Moor and Blue Bank

Blue Bank is the steep hill that carries the A169 from Sleights up onto the moors on its way to Goathland and Pickering. From the car park at the top the view takes in the whole lower valley: Sleights and Ruswarp in the bottom, Whitby Abbey on its headland, the sea beyond, and the moors rolling away west. It is the classic first sight of Whitby for visitors arriving from the south.

Sleights Moor, to the west of the road, is open heather moor with a Bronze Age stone row and easy tracks; the High Bride Stones, a group of standing stones, are a short walk from the road. The whole moor is a blaze of purple in late summer.
