Magpie Café, Whitby

The black-and-white harbourside café whose fish and chips have drawn queues along Pier Road since 1939.

The Magpie Café occupies a black-and-white merchant's house on Pier Road overlooking the harbour, and its fish and chips are among the most celebrated in Britain, with a queue on the pavement most days in summer. The menu runs well beyond haddock to crab, lobster and a dozen kinds of local fish. There is a takeaway hatch for those who cannot wait for a table.
