St Hedda's Church

St Hedda's is far grander than a village of Egton Bridge's size would suggest. Built in 1866-67 for a community that had held on to its Catholic faith through centuries of persecution, its interior is covered in painted panels of the Stations of the Cross and scenes from the life of Christ, with a soaring roof and fine stained glass.

The church holds relics of Blessed Nicholas Postgate, born at Egton Bridge in about 1596, who served the Catholic families of the moors in secret for more than 30 years before he was betrayed, tried and executed at York in 1679 at the age of 82. He is commemorated each summer at the Postgate Rally.

Outside, the church stands beside the river and the stepping stones, a short walk from the Postgate Inn that also bears his name.
