Larpool Viaduct and the Cinder Track

Larpool Viaduct strides across the Esk Valley between Whitby and Ruswarp on thirteen brick arches, 120 feet above the river. It was built in 1884 for the Scarborough and Whitby Railway, and its five million bricks were laid in less than two years. The line closed in 1965, and the viaduct now carries the Cinder Track, a 21-mile walking and cycling route along the old railway to Scarborough via Robin Hood's Bay and Ravenscar.

Walking across the viaduct is free and gives a superb view of the river, the boats at Whitby marina and the abbey. The best view of the viaduct itself is from the riverside path between Ruswarp and Whitby, or from a rowing boat on the river below.

The Cinder Track is level and traffic-free, ideal for families on bikes, though the surface is rough beyond Whitby.
