Arncliffe Wood

Arncliffe Wood clings to the steep north bank of the Esk between Beggar's Bridge and Egton Bridge. It is one of the finest ancient woodlands in the national park, full of sessile oak, ash and holly, mosses, ferns and, in spring, bluebells and wild garlic.

The path through the wood follows a trod, a causeway of flagstones laid centuries ago to carry packhorses and foot traffic through the mud of the valley floor. The stones are worn into hollows by generations of feet and hooves.

The walk from Glaisdale station to Egton station through the wood takes about an hour and can be combined with the train for an easy there-and-back.
