Commondale

Commondale sits in a side valley just north of the Esk, and it looks different from every other village in the area: many of its houses are built of glazed orange brick rather than sandstone, made at the brick and pipe works that operated here until the 1950s.

The village has a small station on the Esk Valley line, a village hall and the Cleveland Inn. Above the village, Commondale Moor is crossed by quiet roads and tracks towards Castleton and Guisborough, with wide views across the dale.

Commondale's war memorial, set on the hillside above the road, is a poignant local landmark.
