Sandsend

Whitby's quieter neighbour: a long sandy beach, a stream to dam, rock pools and cafés at the foot of Lythe Bank.

Sandsend is a small village where two becks run out across a wide sandy beach that stretches all the way back to Whitby, three miles of sand at low tide. It is the family beach of choice for many locals, with rock pools under the cliffs to the north, a stream to dam on the sand, and cafés and a pub by the road.

Behind the village, Mulgrave Woods on the Mulgrave Estate are open to walkers on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, with paths through the trees to the ruins of the old and new Mulgrave castles.

The walk along the beach from Whitby's West Cliff at low tide is one of the best in the area; the X4 bus or the Whitby town bus runs back.
