Grosmont Engine Sheds

Walk through Stephenson's 1836 tunnel to watch steam locomotives being maintained and restored.

A footpath from Grosmont station passes through the original horse-drawn railway tunnel of 1836, said to be the oldest passenger railway tunnel in the world, to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway's locomotive works.

Here the railway's fleet of steam and diesel engines is stabled, serviced and rebuilt. Visitors can watch from a viewing platform, see engines being prepared for the day's trains and, on quieter days, chat with the volunteers. Children love it.

The path continues past the sheds to join the Rail Trail to Beck Hole and Goathland.
