Boggle Hole

A smugglers' cove with a youth hostel in the old mill, a mile along the beach from Robin Hood's Bay.

Boggle Hole is a narrow inlet where Mill Beck runs out to the sea between cliffs, a mile south of Robin Hood's Bay. The 'boggle' was a mischievous local hobgoblin said to live in the caves; the smugglers who used the cove had more practical reasons for keeping people away. The old mill is now YHA Boggle Hole, a favourite family hostel with a café open to walkers.

At low tide it is an easy walk along the sands from Robin Hood's Bay; at high tide use the Cleveland Way along the cliff. Check tide times, because the beach route is cut off completely as the tide rises.
